No one wants to think about having to have engine work done on their car. This is completely natural. Pumps, belts, alternators, head gaskets and suspension systems that require repair can cost a great deal of money.

But people don't always think about the need to replace their tires; even though tires have the greatest impact on your vehicle's safety level. Worn treads can easily contribute to traffic accidents, particularly in poor driving conditions.

I will give you some simple hints in this article that will help you to be sure your tires are reliable and will also extend their life. It just takes a little time and effort once in a while to follow these hints. A few minutes spent regularly in checking your tires will help ensure the safety of you and any other riders in your car.

Hint 1: Check the Air Pressure

A lack of air pressure is the most common cause of tire failure. You may not realize it, but a minute amount of air continuously leaks out between the membranes of the tires. You can't notice the loss of pressure in just a few days or weeks. But the loss is substantial over a period of several months.

Under-inflated tires will reduce your car's fuel efficiency and, more seriously, can affect the steering response of your car. It is also a safety concern because driving without the proper pressure in the tires can ultimately cause the treads to come apart.

The pressure of your tires should be checked every month. The pressure should be adjusted to match the manufacturer's recommended psi level.

Hint 2: Check the Alignment

Problems with your car's alignment can lead to an increase of tread wear in a very short amount of time. An alignment problem has an effect on the angle your wheels can lean and turn. When a caster, toe or camber are not aligned properly you'll be able to feel your car pulling to the left or right while you're driving straight. If your vehicle is front-wheel drive then your front tires will see the most wear and tear.

Too many people take their tires for granted into the tread is so worn down they have no choice but to go and get them replaced. If you just take the time to check your tires periodically you'll get a lot more time out of them. This will not only make your care safer but will improve how your car controls and save you money in the long run.
