Motorcycles are a great means of transportation; they provide the freedom that cannot be obtained in other modes of transportation. This feeling of freedom provides motorcycle riders with a feeling of truly owning the open road. Riding with the air all around you provides an incredible feeling. Riding a motorcycle can be a great way to escape and feel free but they can also be very dangerous. The best way to protect you from the potential danger is to use proper safety procedures. Motorcycle helmets are recommended to anyone who rides a motorcycle.

Due to the nature of the motorcycles there are some risks involved. However these risks can be reduced drastically by the use of a helmet. Motorcycle helmets provide a safety device to the rider in the case of an accident. Accidents happen and they often cannot be avoided the important thing is to be prepared for them.

For this reason motorcycle helmets make sense. They are also believed to save lives. Many riders feel that riding with a helmet takes away from the freedom of the open road. They feel they are no longer open to the wind and the freedom of feeling what a motorcycle is all about. However this is simply not true.

In fact the first helmet was created by a doctor as a result of a fatal accident. A Dr. By the name of Hugh Cairns created the first motorcycle helmet. He had lost a patient who had suffered an injury to his skull as the result of a motorcycle accident and he desired to help others avoid the same situation from happening to them. As a result of his work there have been an untold number of saved lives.

The helmet that Cairns designed is much different than the helmet that is commonly used today. The typical modern helmet is more aerodynamic than those of the past. They also tend to be lighter and better ventilated but stronger than older helmets. Today's helmets offer electronic gadgets such as headphones and intercom systems for listening to music and communicating with another rider.

Along with head protection face protection is also important. Many helmets provide full face shields that help to keep road debris out of a riders face. Face shields also help to keep insects from flying into the eye of a rider.

Helmets with face guards are known as full face helmets. Full face helmets have a hard surface over the chin area and a windshield that can be lifted. These helmets also tend to offer ventilation slits for air circulation. Full face helmets are believed to offer the fullest amount of protection.

Motocross is a popular sport that involves racing motorcycles on dirt tracks and under off-road conditions. The agencies that regulate motocross have implemented strict helmet regulations. These regulations provide for more protection than standard helmets.

The Shorty or half helmet has been a popular helmet since the'50's. This style helmet is regarded as providing the minimum amount of protection. The Shorty basically covers just the top of the head. There is no back of the head protection or chin protection with this style of helmet. It is common however for riders who use this style of helmet to use eye protection such as goggles.

There are other styles of helmets that offer varying degrees of protection. All of these helmets fall between the Shorty and the full face in regards to protection. The type of motorcycle helmets a rider prefers falls strictly to personal preference. Regardless of the style of helmet it is a good idea to protect yourself if you are going to ride.
