Owning a scooter is excellent fun; particularly when the weather is behaving itself. It is also great for saving a bit of money of course which, as the price of gasoline continues to rise, is likely to be an increasing concern for many. With so many types available however, it can be confusing to select the best one.

Owning a scooter is excellent fun; particularly when the weather is behaving itself. It is also great for saving a bit of money of course which, as the price of gasoline continues to rise, is likely to be an increasing concern for many. With so many types available however, it can be confusing to select the best one.

Ahead of anything else, it is necessary to first decide a budget of course. At the very upper end of the scale, it is perfectly possible to spend in excess of 10,000 dollars on a scooter.

If sights are aimed slightly lower, something of two thousand dollars, or below, is easy to find. These will be much simpler models of course; but certainly more than capable for most people's needs.

Be prepared to compromise when looking for your scooter however, and bear in mind that you may not be able to get exactly what you want with your original budget.

The first thing to decide is how heavily you intend to use the scooter. If you are going to be using it as your major form of transport; something with a larger engine and more comfortable ride will be necessary of course. If you will only be using it for short trips, or journeys around a city center, you could possibly afford to look at something offering a little less in these departments.

When looking at what size engine to buy, ensure you have thoroughly checked local laws to ensure your choice will be street legal for where you intend to drive it. The smallest sized engine, at 50cc will be limited to about 45 miles an hour. A standard size for city driving is about 150cc to 200cc, where speeds of 65 miles can be reached.

Certain other things to look out for, that could make your life easier, are automatic transmissions and electronic starters; particularly useful for first time riders of course.

Many are put off by the lack of functionality of a scooter due to their size; however, many have under seat storage for those quick dashes to the grocery store. It is also possible to have side bags fitted which can look stylish depending on the scooter chosen.

Once all the essential decisions have been made, you will be able to really have a bit of fun. Some modern types look a little too functional, and people really enjoy the retro styled Italian scooters; from Vespa and Lambretta, but Honda and Yamaha produce sleek and stylish looking models too.

The biggest problem with riding a scooter is what makes them attractive in the first place; their size. When out on them, do be extra vigilant about other road users around you and, if at all possible, do not take them out in the worst of weathers and very wet or icy conditions.
